2000 DIRTY DOZEN RESULTS
The 18th Annual Dirty Dozen was held on Saturday,
November 15th. 28 riders [12 rookies] rode on a cold [high Temp.
of 33 degrees F] cloudy day with snow flurries. A big thanks
goes out to Mark Powder for officiating, Mike McCarty for driving
the food vehichle, and Keith Chapman for driving the technical
support vehichle. Although worse for some people, the new earlier
date allowed Rob Acciavatti to win his third DD out of four attempts.
Strangely enough, he thought it was only his second win. After
taking the first 5 hills, it looked like Rob might take a stab
at the highest point total record [64 out of a possible 65 set
by Danny Chew back in 1988], but Andy Mor struck on Pig Hill[Rialto
St.]putting an end to Rob's clean sweep chances. Tom Chew was
the first rider out of the Liberty Tunnels. As the group waited
for Ray Russell's flat tire repair on closed McArdle Roadway,
Jody and Adam Lobert rode ahead on their tandem to be the first
up Welsh Way, but were DQed by Danny because they were not with
Tom Chew when he blew his whistle to officially start the hill.
Due credit should be given to brothers Adam and Jody Lobert for
being the first tandem to make every hill, but going ahead on
their own is no way to become prestigious DD hill winners. 22
year old rookie Steve Gergely from West Virginia finished quite
strong taking the last hill from endurance king Chew, and securing
his second place finish. 46 year old stepclimbing master Billy
Kanarek was the oldest points scorer, and finished 5th. Rookie
Andy Mor had an impressive ride winning 3 hills, and finishing
4th overall. Only 11 people scored points. |
