2003 DIRTY DOZEN RESULTS

The 21st Annual Dirty Dozen was held on Saturday, November 29th. Despite a high temperature of just 35 degrees F and a strong wind, 8 brave riders started on wet roads in blinding snow showers. Thanks to Barb Peterson & Steve Revilak who drove the refreshment/support vehicle along with Ben Garrett's wife Daniela. Thanks to oldest (50) hill winner Billy Kanarek for buying all of the pop. Official Jim Polavich's car broke down atop the first hill, so Jim's partner Mark Powder got a ride to the Washington Boulevard Track and his car which he rejoined us with atop the 4th hill. Rookie David Petrou (in tenna shoes) had gear trouble on his retro bike with toe clips/straps, but still finished. Ben Garrett (39x23 low gear) flatted his rear tubular tire on Federal St. (North Side) and finished on it - riding it up the last 6 hills except for Canton which he borrowed Bill Gottberg's rear wheel for. Having driven all the way to Pittsburgh in a rental car from Philadelphia, Garrett had too much pride to get into the support vehicle because of his flat. Mike Kuchera won the sprint out of the Liberty Tunnels. Because of Garrett's flat and the small size of the group, I kept it neutral the entire way between the last two hills. The points lead changed 7 times(see leader's points matrix below), and for the first time ever, the top 3 riders mathematically all had a chance to win the overall up the last hill. I may have been the heaviest Dirty Dozen winner at 180 pounds.

If two riders end up with the same point total at the end, the tie breaker
is who has more wins, 2nds, 3rds, 4ths, & 5ths if needed.

The matrix below shows how the lead changed with the leaders points.
