2004 DIRTY DOZEN RESULTS

The 22nd Annual Dirty Dozen was held on Saturday, November 27th. The high temperature was 57 degrees F under a mostly sunny sky with wind. Thanks to official Mark Powder and refreshment/support vehicle driver Babs Peterson who also registered riders and donated water and fruit. Thanks to oldest (51) points scorer Billy Kanarek for donating all of the pop. Thanks also to photographers Andy Russell (Pittsburgh Tribune Review), Eno Thereska, Bob Harper, April Murphy, Mandy Knotts, and Patty Clark. There were 26 rookies out of 44 starters. Indiana, PA native Rich Zawacki (on his 4th DD) convinced 1993 Race Across AMerica (RAAM) finisher Tom Fanning to ride. With four former DD winners (Johnny Knotts, Ryan McDermitt, Bob Gottlieb, & myself) on the starting line, the big question was would one of us repeat or would a new winner emerge perhaps even a rookie. Kraynick's Team really dominated taking the top two overall places. The top 5 overall places scored most of the points making it very hard for other people to score. I had my lowest points scoring DD ever, getting just one second place hill finish. The top 5 places on the first hill were also the top 5 overall with 2nd and 3rd switched. 1999 winner Ryan McDermitt came up with a theory that applies when 15 or more people start the DD. The person who wins the first hill also wins the overall. There are only two years (1991 & 1995) when this failed to happen. Bike messenger (who was runner up to me last year) Steve Cummings lead the entire day, mathematically winning after the 11th hill. He scored points on all but one hill, winning the most (4) hills. In from California, two time winner Johnny Knotts held onto 2nd place until the 11th hill when Peter Culley overtook him. Mark Nicoll (with the noisiest bike) became the first person to ever win a hill in the big chainring up Berryhill. On the 8th hill (Sycamore St. made famous when Lance Armstrong won three consecutive Thrift Drug Classic races up it from 1992-1994), Patrick Conneely jammed his chain between his biggest cassette cog and the spokes in his rear wheel, and he couldn't get it out so his day was done. Joe Vallese won the sprint out of the Liberty Tubes. Heaviest (219#) rider Phil Esempio made every hill uncluding the steepest hill - 36% Canton on his 3rd attempt. Marty Schneider and his son John quit after 3 hills. Ed DeLuca quit after 6 hills. After only making it halfway up the 11th hill Welsh Way, Pat Garrett and his mountain bike were picked up by Bob Harper who drove him up the last two hills. Eddie Delgros rode the other mountain bike. DD co-founder, 3-time ACA Club Criterium Champ, & 1986 DD winner Bob Gottlieb returned to the DD for the first time in 13 years and was the first rider over 40 placing 6th overall. A busy businessman, he took about a half dozen or so cell phone calls, and had to bail early missing the last two hills. Only 14 or less than a third of the field scored points. Rookie John Minturn who won two hills held a post DD party at his South Side apartment. DD riders present were winner Cummings, Gottlieb, Dave Petrou, Dave Wenger, & myself. Current ACA Club Criterium Champ Jake Lifson & his wife Paulina showed up with Jake getting rediculed for not riding the DD. He just got into town that afternoon. Dave Wenger showed us his home-made videotape of his life on the road as a professional cyclist. Those of us who stayed late got to enjoy an enormous (4 feet in diameter) pizza which host John bought.
