2012 DIRTY DOZEN RESULTS
The 30th annual Dirty Dozen was held on
Saturday, November 24th. I woke up to an inch of fresh, new snow on my
back porch, and when some of my staff people started telling me about all
the bad traffic accidents they had seen on their drive to my house, I was
seriously thinking about postponing or even canceling the DD for the first
time ever. To avoid crashing on snow-covered, icy roads on my ride over to
the start (Bud Harris Cycling Track), I waited as late as possible to leave
my Squirrel Hill home. My 21 year old Nephew Steven Perezluha & I left on
slushy and wet roads around 9 am. We were amazed to see the entire parking
lot filled with eager cyclists ready to tackle Pittsburgh's steepest and
toughest hills despite such lousy weather.
Luckily by the time we left just
after 10 am, the roads were only wet and stayed this way for the first half
of the ride, although some icy spots were reported on some hills. Under
cloudy skies, a stiff wind blew snow showers most of the day with a high
temperature of just 33 degrees F - making it the 3rd coldest DD ever. In
the old days, this would have meant like 10 or less brave riders, but 232
riders started {including 135 (58.2%) rookies} making it the 2nd biggest field.
There were 23 riders over 50 years old including four over 60. There were
9 teenagers. 105 of the 115 pre-registered riders rode. 127 riders registered
on event day. 19 women riders is a new record!
A wonderful new addition this year was Gene Nacey's (Cycling Fusion) LiveStream
live web broadcast which allowed fans to follow the DD at home, and know what
time we would be getting to each hill. Thanks Gene. After a nice police escort
(thanks) off the Highland Park Bridge through Aspinwall, my Nephew won the first
hill (Center Ave./Guyasuta Rd.), and dark horse Chris Sprock won the 2nd hill
(Ravine St./Sharps Hill) - making them tied for the lead. Since earlier reports
had the 3rd hill (Berryhill Rd.) being snow-covered and impassable,
I decided to do away with the flying start down Brownshill Rd., and we
did a slow, track stand start at the bottom on Saxonburg Blvd. (like old hill #6
Rialto St./Pig Hill which was eliminated from the DD this year because of PA Rt. 28
construction at the bottom). 8-time winner and defending champ Steve Cummings
(Stevo) won the hill (melted by the time we got there), but Sprock got 4th giving
him the lead.
Stevo also won the 4th hill (High St./Seavey Rd.). Despite briefly dabbing
the ground, my Nephew was 3rd to the hilltop, but because he stopped, my Nephew
lost his 3rd place (8 points), and we both rode the hill over again. Sprock
got 3rd making him tied for the lead with Stevo. Even though my Nephew & I
arrived at the lunch stop (Millvale Riverfront Park) late, I was still able
to drink two Red Bulls with the Red Bull girls.
In fact, I set a new personal record of drinking 6 (8.4 ounce) cans of RB
throughout the day! Thanks to Red Bull for
becoming a new DD sponsor. Thanks to Brian Wolovich & Millvale Borough for opening
up the bathrooms, providing running water, a heater, and a crew of girl scouts to help
clean up. Also, thanks to my food staff of Ron Lutz & his son Eric, and Dave
Shaffer.
In Millvale, the 5th hill (Logan) had a new approach so that we were turning left
onto it (instead of the usual right). Co-leader Stevo & my Nephew were both so far
back in the pack, that neither of them scored any points. John Cotter won the hill
and Bob Stumpf's 2nd place put him into the overall lead. Co-leader Sprock fell
over (a wet/icy patch on the right got him) near the top, and had to ride the hill
over again. Sprock also had trouble early on the 7th hill (Suffolk/Hazelton/Burgess)
where he jammed his chain between the biggest SPROCKet and the spokes/hub of his rear
wheel (wrecking him). Losing about 20 minutes, a Big Bang support vehicle got him going again,
and he went back to the bottom and finally caught back up to the pack atop the 8th hill (Sycamore). Scoring zero points on
those middle 3 hills knocked him out of the top 3 overall. Thanks to Glenn Pawlak & his
Big Bang Bicycles Store/Shop for sponsoring the
DD again. His brother Scott drove one vehicle with mechanic Evan Robinson, and mechanic
Craig Merritts & his girlfriend Mandy McClintock drove another one.
Old hill #6 (Rialto St./Pig Hill) was eliminated from the DD this year because of PA Rt. 28
construction at the bottom. For tradition sake, I will keep the hill numbers the same so that
the last hill will still be #13 even though we are down to just 12 hills now. Since we stopped
going through the Liberty Tunnels two years ago, the 300 or so foot climb (connecting hill) over
Mt. Oliver ads more climbing (it is longer than Pig Hill) so the new route ends up being just as
tough as the old one.
Even though Bob Stumpf didn't win the 7th (Stevo won Suffolk/Hazelton/Burgess) & 8th (my Nephew
won Sycamore) hills, he still did well enough to maintain his overall lead until we got to hill
#9 Canton in Beechview. Usually if you are riding up the hills in the top 25 or so in the pack,
you are safe in that the riders are strong enough they probably won't crash or stop in front of you
except on 37% grade, cobblestoned Canton where anything can happen. Because of this, Canton usually
draws the biggest crowds cheering riders up (many on multiple attempts).
This year, there was a crash in the lead, points scoring group - causing leader Stump to get shut out.
John Cotter won the hill, and Stevo's 3rd place put him back into the lead, which he held until the end.
In the lead group crash, Eric Lundgren quickly got up and ran with his bike as the 5 person to the top.
However, the DD is not a cyclocross race or a normal bike race in that the emphasis is riding up all the
hills with continuous forward motion and no stopping. Therefore, Lundgren lost his 5th place (6 points).
This rule has to be enforced to keep Canton (and the DD) from turning into a circus. Lundgren did go back
down the hill, and ride all the way up it for official finisher status. If anybody can identify the 10th
place (right behind Eric Turcotte) finisher up Canton, please let me know who it is.
After the food stop on top of Canton, I looped around (so I didn't have to ride down Canton), and I barely
made it to the front group (waiting at the red traffic light where we turn left onto Wenzell Ave.) to blow
my whistle to start the hill that goes up to the left on Boustead (hill #10). My Nephew was too far back
to score any points. Stevo won the hill to increase his lead over Stumpf. My Nephew won the last 3 hills.
After the 12th hill (Barry/Holt/Eleanor), Stevo had another DD mathematically won. DD co-founder and 1986
winner Bob Gottlieb showed up on a motorized bicycle and marshaled some intersections on the South Side.
Thanks Bob.
About 5 miles before the last hill (#13 Flowers/Kilbourne/Tesla), I blow the whistle at the traffic light
where we turn left onto Becks Run Rd. As soon as I did this, my old friend Jonathan Pratt (not the photographer
who once dated Lee-Ann Beatty) took off on a solo breakaway. He got up to about 30 seconds
on the lead group along the Monongahela River on 837, but was caught on the Glenwood Bridge. Having good
endurance from riding (double) centuries with me, Pratt still managed to get 9th place on the hill.
Stevo won his 9th consecutive (a new record) DD. Bob Stump was 2nd. Aside from his pointless rookie DD in
2007, Bob has moved up one place in each DD he has done - 6th place in 2008, 5th in 2009, 4th in 2010, 3rd in
2011, & 2nd this year. This leaves him only one possibility for next year! Despite starting late and having to
chase after the pack up the first hill, John Cotter finished 3rd. My Nephew won the most (5) hills, but he
failed to score points on 5 hills, and finished 4th (same as last year). Dark horse Chris Sprock was 5th. The
highest placed rookie was Randy Hadzor in 7th place.
The only 50+ riders to score points were Pratt & I who finished 12th & 10th. The four 40+ riders to score
points were all 43 years old - Shawn Beeler (14th), Dan Riegner (20th), Eric Turcotte (23rd), & Dan Holland (25th).
When 14 year old Willem deBoer scored a point on the 12th hill, he tied the record (with Max Bergholz in 1987)
for youngest rider to score points. Of the 29 men to score points, only 8 were rookies. Highest low gear finisher:
36x17 {2.118} (also single gear/speed) in 2011, and first fixed gear finisher: 39x20 {1.95} in 2009, Montana Miller
finally scored points this year on his single gear/speed mountain bike with a 36x20 {1.8} gear.
Canton is usually a deciding factor in the women's DD, and this year was no exception. Rookie Nicole Cunningham
(a world class rower from Philadelphia) dominated by winning the first 7 hills before Canton. She fell off her
bike her first attempt up Canton. She didn't try again because her bike didn't have low enough gearing, and she didn't want to
risk a potential injury (from another crash) that could jeopardize her rowing career. She and her husband Sam (also a
world class rower who placed 6th on Logan) rode back to his Pittsburgh house. Rookie Carrie Beringer won Canton, but
didn't make all of the hills. Her husband Eric made all of the hills.
The woman who was in 2nd place - Acadia Klain took over the lead and held it to the end (including winning Boustead &
Welsh Way). She rode last year, but didn't make two of the hills. Armed with a lower gear this year and a better idea
of how to pace herself, Klain made every hill her first attempt except Canton which took 2 tries (she got 2nd place up
it this year). Making Canton on her 5th try and Berryhill on her 2nd, rookie Stephanie Burch (does a lot of riding on
her fixed gear bike) finished 2nd. Needing two tries on Canton, rookie Colleen O'Neil (Montana Miller's girlfriend)
won the last two hills and finished 3rd. Needing 3 tries on Canton, rookie Danielle Millett finished 4th. Rookie Ryanne
Palermo got trapped behind someone who slid out on some road salt right before the top of Logan, and touched down, so she
had to do nearly the entire hill over again. She did make Canton (her favorite hill) her first attempt, and finished 5th.
A member of Pittsburgh Magazine's 2011 40 Under 40 list, and owner of Your Active City,
rookie Sara Petyk only scored one point on Canton, but because she was one of only 6 women who made it up every hill, she finished 6th.
Here is a photo of the top 4 women, at the finish - left to right: winner Klain, 2nd Burch,
3rd O'Neil & 4th Millett.
3rd place finisher last year and a Bicycle Times Magazine blogger, Karen Brooks
had scored 12 points before Canton, but gave up and called for a ride home after 4 or 5 failed attempts up Canton. She told me, "In
addition to just 'not feeling it,' I made a crucial tire choice mistake, and ended up with way too skinny tires." 2nd place finisher
in 2009, Sarah (Kolpin) Venditti scored one point on the first hill, but didn't make it up Logan or Suffolk, and went home after completing
Sycamore. She told me, "I had the wrong gearing and not enough fitness, and realized my effort was futile this time." Of the 19 (largest
women's DD ever!) women who started, 16 (84%) were rookies. Half of the 12 women who scored points on hills made it up every hill. Even
though I had the women wrap a piece of pink tape around their handlebars, it still must have been difficult for the women to have kept track of
their positions up hills in a sea of 212 men. The women are to be congratulated for showing up on such a raw, wintry day!
Seth Gernot & Rebecca Rankin became the first mixed couple to finish the DD on a tandem. Another member of Pittsburgh Magazine's 2011 40 Under 40 list,
rookie Eric Osth made it up all of the hills on his first attempts. 6'10" tall, 275 pound Frank Curl (Of Mercer, PA) became the BIGGEST rider to ever start the DD. He failed to make Canton & the last hill, but is to be commended for trying! He wrote the following e-mail to me:
"Hey Danny, I came up about 30 feet Short on the last hill (you can see me on the video dropping a leg). Canton was the no go..I tried three times, ended up messing my derailleur up and having to have Big Bang fix it at the bottom of the next hill (Boustead), but on the bright side, I was climbing that hill along with a couple other guys that had problems, and when we got to the top, we had no idea where to go (we where the last), so Gene Nacey {from the LiveStream webcam} lead us all the way back to the pack via the Liberty Tunnels (on old DD route)..so I got to ride thru with a pace car and ended up ahead of you guys on the first hill (Welsh Way) on the South Side. How cool was that!?"
A DD finisher in 2007, Xavier A. Szigethy & his 13 year old son Xavier J. showed up for the DD, but decided the roads looked too dangerous. As they started to drive home, the sun peeked out so they detoured off to check the conditions of Logan (in Millvale), which had been salted and looked climbable. They changed their minds, and drove to Aspinwall (oval parking lot was full) to the bottom of the first hill where they started from. The same icy spot got both of them on the 3rd hill (Berryhill) which they redid. They finally caught up to the group at the Millvale lunch stop. Both made Canton on their first try, and the rest of the hills. The youngest finisher this year, Xavier J. missed breaking 13 year, 36 day old Andrew Reay's youngest finisher record (set in 2009) by 3.5 months. X. J. nearly tied Willem de Boer (finished as a 13 year old last year) as the 2nd youngest rider to ever finish the DD. At 4'9" tall and weighing just 85 pounds, X. J. probably is the smallest DD finisher ever. Trying to become the oldest finisher ever, 66 year old (oldest rider this year) Terry Timko failed to make the last little section of Logan in Millvale. After a failed attempt up Canton, he flatted there, and did not try again.
Thanks to returning sponsor Eat'n Park and Mark Broadhurst who made sure there were hot drinks at the start, and
plenty of Smuckers Uncrustables peanut butter & jelly sandwiches at the food stops. Thanks to the Eat'n Park employees who came out to marshal the busy intersections near their restaurants on the course -
At PA Rt. 8 & Middle Rd./Saxonburg Blvd. in Shaler Twp., and at Crane Ave. & Banksville Rd. in Beechview. Thanks to Monica Reisz, Patty George, Jamie Sloan & Ron Hayes for doing registration in the morning. Thanks to returning hilltop points scorers Kevin & Amanda Beatty (men's) and Carol Moore (women's).
Thanks to Gary Baun for driving the wheel van again, and to Karl Bowman Sr. for driving the clothing vehicle. Thanks to Chris Helbling for doing such
a wonderful job as head marshal again! Thanks to the rest of the marshals: Dan Marasco (from OTB Cafe), Ken Kaszak, Mikhail Evstiounin, Paul Beaver,
Ted Popek, Seth Gernot & Rebecca Rankin on a tandem, Dan Blumenfeld on a recumbent, Jim Logan, Mike Coumos, Matt Kurpiewski, Joe Ross, Greg Allan,
Andrew Sherman, Ted King-Smith, Alan Orlansky, Cliff Spiegel, Stuart Strickland, James Brock & Lucia Aguirre. Thanks again to Steve Mentzer for loaning me his 10 gallon orange coolers and 6 gallon blue cubes he uses for the Rachel Carson Trail Challenge. Thanks to Fineview Citizens Council board president June Lloyd & Melissa Gallagher for encouragement posters, and setting up water and gatorade jugs atop of hill #7 - Suffolk/Hazelton/Burgess - the single toughest DD hill! Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl was spotted on the hill!
990 people have ridden (started) the DD over the past 29 years. 21 riders graduated to my 3 or more DDs ridden list this year. The riders with the most DD's riding this year were myself (with 29), Ray Russell (with 12). Stevo & Bryan Routledge (each with 10), and Ryan Borcz, Jeff Grimm & Ed DeLuca
(all with 9).
The first batch of 30th Annual Dirty Dozen t-shirts sold out, but if enough people are still interested, Justin Flagg may be able to have another
batch made up. Here is the info on them:
