2014 DIRTY DOZEN RESULTS

The 32nd annual Dirty Dozen was held on Saturday, November 29th. With a high temperature of 48 degrees F, sunny skies turning cloudy, and dry conditions, we had a record turnout of 328 riders (including a record women's field of 27)! Of these 328 cyclists, 189 (57.6%) were rookies (first timers). A record 67 riders were over 50 years old including ten over 60. There were 10 teenagers (all male). Bob Gottlieb, my brother Tom Chew, & myself founded/started the DD back in 1983. Working as a mechanical engineer in Hong Kong, China for a decade, Tom has missed many DD's, so I was delighted when he recently moved back to the United States to Oakland, CA. He rode this DD {his first one since 2000 (back when there were less than 55 riders)} and was amazed to see what the event has grown into. Here is a photo of Myself & Tom atop of Berryhill.

Back again (for the 3rd consecutive year) was Gene Nacey's (Cycling Fusion) LiveStream live web broadcast which allowed fans to follow the DD at home, and know what time we would be getting to each hill. Thanks Gene.

10-time consecutive DD winner (a record that may never be equalled) and defending champ Steve Cummings (Steevo) decided to take the pressure off himself by not going for the win this year, but I give him lots of credit for still showing up. Andy Seitz won the first hill and held the lead thru the 5th hill Logan. 17 year old triathlete Ian Baun took the lead after he won the 6th hill Rialto St. (Pig Hill) on which Seitz was pointless. Baun led the rest of the way and won his first DD (winning 6 hills) dethroning Steevo! 52 year old West Virginian Gunnar Shogren (1991 DD winner) scored points on every hill (except the last hill) including four 2nd place finishes to finish 2nd overall on a single speed bike! Seitz finished 3rd and Steevo won 4 hills to finish 4th. 16 year old Willem deBoer was 5th and WV promoter J. R. Petsko (once the heaviest DD finisher at 240 pounds in 2009) finished 8th. Here is a photo of Myself & the top 3 men finishers (Andy, Ian & Gunnar) at the awards ceremony.

On the 3rd hill Berryhill, 215 pound Christian Korey wanted points so bad, he dive bombed the Brownshill Rd. descent (reaching 50.3 mph), and led the pack across Saxonburg Blvd. - nearly crashing into the lead vehicle driven by Gene Nacey (doing the live webcam) before coming to a stop at the bottom of the hill. Here is a video of it. Except on Canton (where anything can happen), usually the front of the pack is a safe place to be on the hills because the strongest/fastest riders rarely have problems such as stopping or crashing. On the middle section of the 7th hill Suffolk/Hazelton/Burgess (this is the toughest DD hill!), while he was leading, rookie Alex Ticu (wearing a pink top) stopped, and managed to get himself & bike to the side of the road, where he laid down in the grass. You can see this 10 seconds into this video. The guy was strong enough to score 20 points on 4 different hills, yet he had no desire to go back down to the bottom of the hill and redo it to be an official finisher. He is listed as a DNF, and should be placed below all of the finishers, but I can no longer keep track of all of the men riders.

The highest placed rookie was Aaron Ferguson in 9th. Of the 32 men to score points, 8 were rookies, four were 50+, and four were teenagers. 69 year old Paul Salipante became the new oldest finisher! This breaks 65 year old triathlete IronMan Roger Brockenbrough's 15 year old record set in 1999. Last year, Don Snow became the heaviest DD finisher at 260 pounds. Coming in at 270 pounds this year, he attempted to break his own record, but failed to make all of the hills. 6' 10" tall and weighing 280 pounds, Frank Curl almost became the new heaviest finisher this year. He finally made Canton (the only hill that has kept him from finishing his last 2 DD's), but had trouble with the last 2 hills. He had to redo the 12th hill Barry/Holt/Eleanor, but he made it his 2nd attempt. On the last hill Flowers/Kilbourne/Tesla, he stopped just short of the top on Tesla on his first try, so went back down to the bottom to redo it. On his 2nd attempt, the same thing happened to him again in the same place. What a real heartbreaker for poor Frank.

The women tie a piece of pink tape around their handlebars to distinguish themselves from the men. In the record women's field of 27 (of which 16 were rookies), rookie Lesley Butler won the first two hills and held the lead thru the 4th hill High/Seavey. Gunnar's wife Betsy Shogren won the next hill Logan, took the lead, and won her third DD (out of 3 starts). She also became the first woman to finish and win on a single speed bike! Going into the final hill Flowers/Hilbourne/Tesla, Betsy only had a 3 point lead on Lesley. Although Lesley did win the last hill, Betsy hung tough (most likely spun out in her only {low} gear) on that long race condition stretch (between the last two hills) along the Monongahela River, and finished 2nd on the last hill to secure her overall victory. Betsy won 8 hills. Lesley won 4 hills and finished 2nd overall. Trumpet player Erin Yanacek won Canton and finished 3rd overall. Here is a nice photo of the top 3 women finishers (Erin, Betsy & Lesley) atop of Mt. Washington (after the 8th hill Sycamore).

I have always wondered if we will ever see a woman score men's points (top 10 on any hill) on the DD. Betsy (wearing a purple top) placed 15th overall on the 12th hill Barry/Holt/Eleanor. Steevo clearly wins this hill by a huge margin. 5 hours, 27 minutes into this video, start counting with winner Steevo to see that Betsy finishes 15th. At least 9 women made it up all of the hills. Of the 9 women to score points, 6 were rookies. 51 year old Beth Jameson broke her own oldest female finisher record by another year, but Willem deBoer's Aunt Yvette deBoer (also 51) also finished, and is less than two months younger than Beth. Ashli Molinero became the first hand-cyclist to ever start the DD. Unfortunately, she quit after the first hill.

Tenacious rookie Lori Paul (Here is a photo of Lori & I on Canton.) eventually made it up all of the DD hills in one day on the Western Pennsylvania Wheelmen (WPW) DD training rides before the DD, however, on DD day near the top of the 12th hill on Eleanor St., a rider crashed in front of Lori - taking her down and rendering her bike practically unridable. Fellow rider and friend, Mike Masarik wrote this e-mail to me:

Hello Dan,

I hope all is well with you. I just wanted to drop you an email and let you how much I enjoyed the DD this year. You hold a spectacular event that you have made unique to the city of Pittsburgh. I participated in the Wheelmen scouting rides this fall with Jim Logan and Stef Burch, where we had a regular group of riders that shared a very supportive comradery. One of the riders I met and came to know is Lori Paul. Lori first appeared on the rides in excellent physical shape, but in need of a little confidence and technique on the steep hills. She was a quick learner and we watched her go from not being able to make Canton (despite repeated attempts), to making multiple successful repeats of Canton. People have often asked me how hard it is to do the DD: I simply tell them that on race day you must be a strong rider, have adequate cycling skills, be mentally tough, and be fortunate enough to stay clear of the carnage. Lori had all of the these points covered, except for staying clear of the carnage. She was knocked to the ground about 100 feet short of the top of Logan. She went back to the bottom and repeated. She rode incredibly strong and remained clean until Eleanor, where she was again taken out by no fault of her own. This time, the results were mechanically catastrophic. After making it up to the rest area on top, she told me there was something wrong with her bike. Upon initial inspection, it looked like the rear derailleur / hanger may have twisted from impact and caused a severe ghost shift across multiple rear cogs. Fellow scouting rider Will O’Donnell, myself, and a sweeping Marshall on a scooter were attempting a quick fix when we discovered the chain was twisted (like a DNA strand). With only multi tools, my Leatherman pliers, and limited time, the situation did not look good for her to continue and cover the distance to Hazelwood. I looked at Lori; her hands were bloodied and greasy from attempting to clear the chain from the rear cassette, she was begging us to move on without her, and she was teary eyed. This really got to me because I know how damn tough she is. Not knowing exactly what to do and in an almost comical move, I grabbed a paper towel that I had previously wiped my greasy hands on and handed it to her to dab her tears (I might as well handed her a piece of trash from the street). May God bless the good Samaritan who was nearby watching the race and had a bike carrier on the back of his vehicle (Toyota Rav4?). He offered to take her (and her bike) to the bottom of Flowers. We saw this as a viable option for her. However, by now I’m guessing that Will and myself were now more than 5 minutes behind the back of the peloton. I quickly calculated our options and decided it best to drop back down Arlington / Josephine / South Side / Hot Metal, rather than have just two of us riding 837 by ourselves. We caught up with Lori (and the remainder of peloton) again at the bottom of Flowers where she insisted that Will and I push on and finish. We were able to get her chain shifted to the middle of the rear cassette where it would skip, but not jump up off the low gear. She skipped, clunked, and clattered her way up the last hills, ultimately having to push her bike up Tesla. If you ever have an award for the Dirtiest of the DD, Lori should be a consideration. She is tough as nails and embodies what this event is all about.

With best regards,
Mike Masarik

Canton Avenue was easier than ever this year because the rough cobblestones had been smoothed over. This meant way fewer crashes and less people needing multiple attempts, which was a good thing given the record size of the field this year. To hard core DD purists however, this meant some of the mystique of Canton (the steepest DD hill at a 37% grade) was gone.

To be an official DD finisher, you must ride up every hill without stopping or crashing. You must have continuous forward motion UP the hill! You can weave back and forth as long as you are continuing to go UP. As soon as you start to go level or back down the hill, you are disqualified. You can go back down to the bottom of the hill, and try again as many times as you want. In the early days of 20 or fewer riders, I was able to keep track of who made all the hills, but once the DD grew bigger than this, I was unable to police it anymore. Now there exists an honor system where riders keep track of themselves. Of course when it comes to scoring points and setting DD records, I still have to keep track of this.

I want to recognize the staff who help me run the DD. Thanks to Maura Spillane, Abby Ritter, Monica Reisz, Ashley Bock, & Dr. Patty George for doing registration in the morning. Thanks to Dara Stern for selling DD jerseys. Here is a photo of Monica, Dara (behind me), Ashley & Abby (purple hat). Thanks to Carol Moore & Nina Wilczek for officiating (scoring points) atop hills. Thanks to Ron & son Eric Lutz, Dave & daughter Izabella Shaffer, and Heather Ostrowski for doing the food/drink stops - Millvale's Riverfront Park on the Allegheny River at the bottom of the 5th hill Logan, and at the top of the 9th hill Canton Ave. Here is a photo of Eric, Dave, Ron, Izabella & Heather on Canton. I welcomed Jenn Grieb & the Three Rivers Rowing Association as a new DD sponsor. They opened up their Millvale Boathouse building for us to use the bathrooms at the lunch stop. Thanks again to Brian Wolovich & Millvale Borough for opening up the library. Thanks again to Steve Mentzer for loaning me his 10 gallon orange coolers he uses for the Rachel Carson Trail Challenge.

Thanks to Glenn Pawlak & Big Bang Bicycles for sponsoring the DD again this year. Driving the BB support vehicle were Evan Robinson & Steve Kurpiewski. Thanks to returning sponsor Eat'n Park and Brooks Broadhurst who made sure there were hot drinks at the start, and plenty of Smuckers Uncrustables peanut butter & jelly sandwiches at the food stops. Thanks to the Eat'n Park employees who came out to marshal the busy intersections near their restaurant on the course - At PA Rt. 8 & Middle Rd./Saxonburg Blvd. in Shaler Twp., and at Crane Ave. & Banksville Rd. in Beechview. Thanks to returning sponsor Adam Closkey & Red Bull. Thanks to Gary Baun (Ian's father) for driving the clothing/spare equipment vehicle again. If you lost any clothes, please e-mail him at soleman33@aol.com or me at DanChew@yahoo.com about it.

Thanks to 5-time DD rider Chris Helbling for doing such a wonderful job as head marshal again! This was also the first year he has ever scored points - 2nd place on Berryhill, he got 15 points to finish 11th place! Other riding marshals (rangers) were 9 time DD riders Joe Ross, Ted King-Smith & Jim Logan. Thanks to the rest of the marshals: Phil DeLuce (on a motorcycle), Ken Kaszak, Mikhail Evstiounin, Dan Blumenfeld, Cliff Spiegel, Stuart Strickland, John Arita, Justin Schell, Sarah Quesen, Faris Kindilchie, Dara Stern, & Janet Kikta. If I left anybody else out, please tell me who you are. Thanks again to Fineview Citizens Council board president June Lloyd and Debbie Reay & her son Eli for placing encouragement signs, setting up water, Gatorade & snacks atop of Suffolk/Hazelton/Burgess - the single toughest DD hill!

1,288 people have ridden (started) the DD over the past 31 years. 42 riders graduated to my 3 or more DDs ridden list. The riders with the most DD's riding this year were myself (with 31), Tom Chew (with 13), and Stevo & Bryan Routledge (each with 12). I was unable to ride the 2008 DD because of back surgery. This ended my record 25 consecutive DDs streak. Currently, Steevo has the longest consecutive DDs ridden streak at 12 years. Bryan Routledge has ridden the most DDs (12) without ever scoring any points.

Congrats to all the riders who conquered every hill. To those who didn't, train harder next year and bring a lower gear. If you have say over 50 DD photos in a Facebook album and would like to share them, please send the link to me at DanChew@yahoo.com and I will put them in my media links section. Both DD winners received free entries into the 2015 Mt. Davis Challenge compliments of race director Jim Sota.
