Johnny Knotts led the entire event. He also won the prestigious sprint out of the Liberty Tunnels on a solo break! Current ACA club champion Joe Papp watched in amazement as Johnny rode him off his wheel.

If two riders end up with the same point total at the end, the tie breaker is who has more wins, 2nds, 3rds, & 4ths.

1998 DIRTY DOZEN NOTES

34 starters was a record turnout. The group surveyed the new half mile Washington Boulevard TRACK before going up the first hill. Roger Brockenbrough was the oldest finisher at 64 years old. Oscar Swan was the oldest points scorer at 56 years old. Rob Gaus was the first rookie finisher. Only 3 of the 14 rookies scored points. Jamey McCalla was penalized one point for walking/running up the last part of Eleanor Street. An estimated 8 or so riders were not official Dirty Dozen finishers. To have the honor and glory of being known as official Dirty Dozen finishers, riders must complete every hill with continous forward motion upwards (no putting one's foot down[dabs], crashing, or turning off onto a side street). Since several of the hills(especially Canton Avenue)claim casualities on the first attempt, riders are permitted as many tries as needed, but they must go back down to the bottom of the hill first. Daniel Chew once rode up and down Canton Avenue 66 consecutive times over two hours in a 42x24 gear without falling/crashing once.

A pack split after the 3rd hill (Berryhill) nearly turned the Dirty Dozen into a road race. Tom Chew and Matt Eaton led a majority group up the 4th hill (High St./Seavy Rd.) before the second group (containing Daniel Chew and Joe Papp [Who were in 2nd & 3rd place overall]) even got to the hill. While the group was eating atop Seavy Rd., a furious Joe Papp and friend Tim O'Toole broke away and won the 5th hill(Logan).

After this in retaliation, Dan & Tom Chew broke away to win the 6th (Pig Hill/Rialto St.) and 7th (Suffolk/Hazelton/Burgess) hills. Realizing that the fate of the Dirty Dozen (which they created back in 1983) was in their hands, the Chew brothers waited at the top of Burgess St. for the raving group, and held a meeting with official Mark Powder. The so called no rules policy of past Dirty Dozen's would have to be dropped. The increase in group size and competitiveness levels had brought out the worst in riders. Rules would now be needed to keep the group together. It was decided that the ride would be neutral between hills and that there would be specific starting zones for each hill, however to keep the old tradition alive of hammering the flats before the last hill, Flowers/Tesla began very early at the left turn onto Becks Run Rd. from Mountain Avenue which had the pack shattered into small groups before the actual hill began.

A big thanks goes out to the vehichles which drove along. Mike McCarty drove official Mark Powder to the top of the hills before the riders got there. Obese Ron Lutz drove his work minivan with food (compliments of ride leader Dan Chew), and as technical support. Rider Jeff Paul's sister Sue drove a third vehichle.
