1999 DIRTY DOZEN NOTES 54 starters was a record turnout. 22 out of the 34 riders who rode in 1998
came back for more torture! Roger Brockenbrough was the oldest finisher again at age 65. Ryan Mele was the youngest at age 14. At least two other 14 year olds have finished in previous years - Max Bergholz & Josh Smith. Dave Wenger was the first rookie. Only two rookies scored points - the other one being Bret Goodpaster. Billy Kanarek was the oldest [46] points scorer this year.Families have been riding in increasing numbers. Two brother teams: Ride
creators Dan & Tom Chew, and Jody Lobert & his older brother Adam who was an original member [pioneer] of the ACA back in the early 1970's before historian Joe Papp was even born! Three father/son combos: Roger & son John Brockenbrough, Alan & son Dave Wenger, and John & son Ryan Mele.Mark Powder officiated atop hills. Mark & Mary Hess drove the support vehichle[including snacks provided by Danny Chew]and videotaped the event. Jay Wolkof who now lives in California returned to his Dirty Dozen roots. While warming up at the Washington Boulevard TRACK, Keith Chapman crashed into the cable chain and never made it to the top of the first hill, but continued along in a support vehichle. At the top of Berryhill, Matt Eaton dropped out after he spotted a crack in his crank arm, but continued along with his wife Kathy in another support vehichle. Ron Lutz was so obese[255#] and slow that he only made it up 6 of the hills including Canton Avenue. After a crash atop Logan broke Billy Kanarek's derailluer cable, he did Pig Hill on a borrowed bike while his bad cable was replaced from Matt Eaton's bike no longer in use. The Dirty Dozen is very rough on equipment.
Ryan McDermitt had the Dirty Dozen mathematically won after the tenth hill, so he took it easy after that except for leading a 3 man [along with Gaus & Dave Wenger] breakaway before the last hill. Not knowing the route, they missed the turn up Flowers Avenue, and Dave Wenger remained lost for quite a while. Since Ryan already had the win sewn up, the real competition was on now for 2nd place between Joe Papp & Danny Chew. Believing that he went into the final hill tied with Joe Papp, Chew won it in convincing manner [as he has done for the past 4 years]only to find out that official Mark Powder had made a mistake in Chew's points total after the 4th hill, and had been telling him that he had two more points than he actually had for the rest of the event. Exhausted Papp was delighted to find out that he was bumped up to 2nd place because of the mistake, and event organizer Chew frustrated that he had been bumped down to 3rd place with no more hills left. The Papp/Chew duel was very close throughout the entire event with Joe barely edging Danny out at the end by just one controversial point.
Much congrats are given to Joe though for being able to rise to the occasion and give what seemed like much more than 100% of his body which was
seen lying atop the last several hills like a corpse. At the post event pizza
party dinner at the Chew House, Papp revealed to Chew that he was even more cooked/hammered than after his biggest result ever at the prestigous Univest Gran Prix race in September. Coming from 3 time ACA club champ Joe, this says a lot about the toughness of the Dirty Dozen. That Papp was able to push himself so hard for merely pride when there was no money to be won. So those of you who were able to ride up every hill[several riders were seen either stopped or walking up hills], consider yourself tough!
